Engelmann in Milan: Three gateways for ten floors!
Highest-quality condominium in ten-story buildings? Quite normal. Over 200 heat meters and more than 400 water meters installed? Also normal. Reading it all with only three gateways? Anything but normal! Such a project is not simple, as metering professionals can confirm. Numerous factors weaken radio signals: thick walls, metal struts, large distances, reflection, refraction, and more. So, anyone who wants to read almost 600 smart metering devices with gateways under normal circumstances would have to install quite a few of them. Not so in a project in the wonderful city of Milan in northern Italy. There, Data Energy installed only three gateways from Engelmann to read a little more than 200 heat energy meters and nearly 400 water meters through an AMR radio network.
The task was to completely replace the existing M-Bus system and make it remotely readable. For this, Data Energy dismantled all old heat and water meters and replaced them with ultrasonic SensoStars and WaterStars. Added to this were three gateways and some repeaters: all from Engelmann. The latter were the key to success. Data Energy strategically positioned the gateways and repeaters to ensure they captured all devices securely. This now allows all devices to be read remotely and tenants to see their consumption behavior in a portal of Data Energy: on the one hand, a legal requirement and on the other essential for saving energy. Thanks to intelligent Engelmann technology, Data Energy can also warn users of anomalies and water leaks. This project once again demonstrates that the entire Engelmann system is optimal for solving even challenging situations.
